I wrote Surgeon Genl Smith the other day asking an appointment of "Contract Surgeon". He replied that He was not the person to grant the appointments: but referred me to Surgeon Genl Hammond - I have written the Enclosed letter for him, and will be under great obligation to you if you will forward it to Surgeon Hammond together with a recommendation from Yourself Father requested me to ask this of you. If you can give me a recommendation please do so immediately and forward the enclosed letter with it. By so doing You will greatly oblige Father and myself - Yours Truly
