To Joseph Meixell, Esq.
From H. C. Pala
2 pages
Meixell’s nephew, John J. Clark, enlisted in Captain Hammer[?]’s company of the 12th PA Cavalry with the belief that he would become an officer. He has not yet received the advancement in position he had expected. Pala asks if Meixell could use his connections with Eli Slifer "to procure a better position for your nephew," perhaps the open position for a first Lieutenant. On the bottom of the letter is a note from Meixell to Eli Slifer stating that he has not seen Clark for four or five years. However, if Slifer trusts "the gentleman recommending him," then the promotion would be "a favor to many who wish the young man well."
