Manuscript by Eli Slifer

Slifer writes that he does not wish "to be a candidate for the Gubernatorial nomination." He has mainly served in Congress as a Republican, and accepts "democratic nominations . . . more from a sense of duty than as matters of pleasure." He thinks that to be elected as Governor he would have to "resort to personal effort." Slifer appreciates "the kind partiality" shown to him, but begs to "decline the honor you propose to confer." He knows the nominee selected will "have reference to our cause more than to the personal ambition of individuals." He thinks the party will triumph as long as "our principles and Candidates are such as to deserve success."
