This manuscript fragment begins with a discussion of monopolies, and how "individual enterprise is every where subordinated to asserted power." It continues by stating the country was "founded on the equality of Manhood." Individual rights were protected, and special privileges seldom granted. However, "the magnitude" of the Civil War forced the government to "assume gigantic powers" and take money away from the American public. It "fostered monster corporations . . ." then, "the day of small things suddenly passed . . . ." Overarching greed prevails: "Men are no longer rich unless they have millions at their command."
