NAVIGATION
Functionality
and appearance of this website may vary when viewed on different computers,
depending on internet browser, settings, and preferences. Below are hints
for optimal usage of the site:
- Most pages
contain bibliographic rollover captions which appear when the mouse
is placed over an image. Move the mouse off to the side to restore the
original image. (NOTE: Some early browsers may not support rollovers)
- In the
Annals of Buffalo Valley section, some chapters
may appear to be incomplete, the text shorter than on other pages. All
chapters are scanned in their entirety. If a chapter begins or ends
in the middle of a page, the excess white space has been cropped.
- In the
Documents section, it is possible to examine
two screens simultaneously. One can view the facsimile and the transcription
at the same time for a comparative study. Choose one of the pages, and
a new browser window will open. If the browser is in full-screen mode,
click the second button on the top right to partially minimize the window.
Resize by moving the mouse to the very corner of the browser, where
directional arrows will appear. Use these arrows to adjust the size.
Then open the second page, and repeat the steps for size adjustments.
- To search
for a word on the current page, use the Edit menu. Choose "Find
in Page." Enter the term or phrase and begin the search. (NOTE:
The command will search one page at a time. The process must be repeated
for searches of multiple pages. "Find in Page" cannot search
digital newspaper images)
- To print
a complete document, choose "File - Print." To print a section
of text, use the "Print Screen" key on the top right row of
the keyboard. The image of the screen will transfer to the clipboard.
Open a program which allows pasting and editing of images, such as a
paint program (most operating systems automatically install Paint on
the hard disk), a photograph editor, or a word processing application.
When the program is open, choose "Paste" from the Edit menu.
The image will be transferred to the open document. Choose "File
- Print Current Page."
- If pages
appear to be irregular or the font abnormal, check to see if the font
"Verdana" is loaded on the computer. If not, locate a fonts
website and copy "Verdana" into the fonts files in the system
folder. If "Verdana" is already loaded and the font still
appears to be incorrect, check preferences for the browser. The command
to override document-specified fonts should not be selected.
- Refresh
or empty cache frequently.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Browsers/Software:
The
site is best viewed on a PC using Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. Netscape
Navigator may also be used. Any browser less than version 4.0 may not
allow all aspects to be accessed. To view the Published Histories section,
Acrobat Reader must be loaded on the computer. This program may be downloaded
from the Adobe website.
Resolution:
The
computer should be set to accomodate the resolution of the site, which
is formatted at 800x600 pixels.
Digitized
Images/Graphics:
Three types
of images are used on this website: TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), GIF
(Graphic Interchange Format), and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group).
All photographs and images are scanned at 400-600 dpi (dots per inch)
and are stored off-line on university machines as uncompressed TIFF files.
After optimization and processing, they are stored on CDs in Special Collections/University
Archives. The TIFF files are uncompressed, and have been scanned at 400-600
dpi resolution. Color is 24-bit RGB true color by default. GIF images
also use 24-bit RGB color, and have a resolution of 72 dpi. All JPEG images
combine 24-bit RGB color and 72 dpi resolution with JPEG compression (approximately
1:10 compression).
