The magnificent 42-Line Bible printed from movable type by Johann Gutenberg in Maintz, Germany, circa 1450 A.D., is the most revered cornerstone of Western printing. Based on richly elaborate Medieval illuminated manuscripts, the Bible is exquisite in both artisanship and craftsmanship. There were 165 copies printed on paper, and thirty-five on vellum. Decorations include an array of miniature religious icons, Medieval flowers, dragons, peacocks, and falcons. The lavish Pageant Books facsimile
edition, one of 996 copies, is bound in leather with 24-carat gold spine
lettering. After experimentation with lithography and various printing
processes, then feeding each color sheet through the press seven times,
the producer of this facsimile has carefully matched the treasured original.
