Bird Species: Ornithological Collection
From listings of local species compiled by a Bucknell alumnus to works of renowned artists Thomas Bewick, John James Audubon, and John Gould, selected ornithological depictions in Special Collections/University Archives range from the early 1800s to a contemporary fine press limited edition imprint produced in 1930.
Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), eminent British printmaker and illustrator, published his two-volume History Of English Birds between 1797-1804. Bewick greatly expanded the art of printmaking by including wood engravings from watercolor sketches of birds in their natural habitats.
John Audubon (1785-1851), naturalist, ornithologist and artist, is revered for his beautiful drawings and paintings of North American birds. In the Birds Of America series, published in 1844, Audubon places a comprehensive collection of species within natural settings.
John Gould (1804-1881), celebrated scientist and ornithologist, published the first of his lavishly detailed folio works, A Century of Birds from The Himalaya Mountains, in 1831 - 1832. His five-volume Birds of Europe was printed between 1832-1837. During his lifetime, Gould produced over 3,000 richly colored plates in forty separate volumes.
