EDITOR'S NOTE [RETURN]
While the primary objective of the Ellen Clarke Bertrand Library is
to provide the highest standard of service to the faculty, students,
and staff of the university, the needs of other researchers are
recognized, and generally can be accommodated during times
when campus usage is at lower levels. This guide, generated to
assist genealogists in their search for family history, is available in
both bound paper copies, and in electronic format on the web at:
http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/isr/sheary/ Use of the information
compiled here can eliminate replication of effort and unnecessary costs.

An Introduction to Genealogical Research, and Selected
Electronic Genealogical Sources are included. These should be
consulted first. The Internet can be one of the best approaches to
family history research. Not only are there instructional pages, but
many repositories offer direct access to large informational
databases. After becoming familiar with the list of holdings, and
the accessibility of material for all repositories in the four-county
area, researchers can tailor their plans to yield the best results.

Most state archives, family history centers, historical societies, and
public libraries offer services specifically geared to genealogical
studies. Some of these repositories have the same resources as
academic institutions and courthouses, and many may have more lineage
records, published histories, indexes, bibliographies, and biographies.

There are a number of factors to consider in organizing
genealogical research. Users are strongly advised to make prior
arrangements before visiting a repository. Fragility, copyright, and
donor restrictions may preclude duplication of material. Inquiries
must be clear and concise. Immediate responses to mail or
phone requests cannot be expected, given limited staff and high
usage.

Researchers should be aware that few indexes are available for
works published in the 19th century. Early newspapers do not
have separate sections devoted to births, marriages, and deaths.
Also, sending simultaneous questions to every area repository
can be confusing, and expensive. Searches should be narrowed
according to location and holdings. It is helpful to become familiar
with the finding aids that are available before constructing a
research strategy.

INTRODUCTION TO GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH [RETURN]

A family without a genealogy
is like a country without a history
__ Traditional Chinese Saying (1) Compiling family history is a journey of discovery. The result is a woven fabric of stories comprising a valuable legacy for those who follow, fabric created from multiple individual threads forming a unique heritage. Begin with gathering all known facts. Search family Bibles, documents, letters, and diaries. Request that older family members share their memories, including occupations, places of residence, and military service. If possible, capture these interviews on sound or videotape recordings. When pertinent locales and family names have been pinpointed, list what data may be available in each region. Assign research priorities after preparing a list of locations. Circling areas on state maps can be helpful. Plan, then maintain, a standard format for recording data. Begin with location of known information. As the search expands, keep precise, complete citations: name of repository; title, author, publisher, date, and page numbers; name of manuscript collection and folder number; and the Superintendent of Documents, or SuDoc numbers, of materials issued by the federal government. Consult the numerous sources available on compiling a family history, and conduct web searches. The next step is to check national, state, county, church, and cemetery records. Birth, marriage, death, census, tax, mortgage, and military records are generally available at state archives and county courthouses, as are deeds and wills. Consider family history projects as fascinating treasure hunts. There will always be more information to uncover, as well as unavoidable delays and disappointments, but many threads will draw together into a rich tapestry of vibrant stories about those who have gone before.
